If you plan to do a bit of traveling, real estate hunting, or check out several beaches and towns in a short amount of time, the best way to do it is by renting a car.
Major international car rental agencies and private car rentals are found in Nicaragua. Most rental agencies operate like those in the United States, and many allow you to reserve a car online before arriving here.
The cost of renting a vehicle depends on the year, model and make of car. If you are planning on going to the beach, off the beaten path, or tooling around during the rainy season, fourwheel drive is a must. Many roads are in tough shape here and can flood during the wet season; four-wheel drive makes getting around a lot easier. You can usually find a deal to rent a smaller four-wheel drive, like a Toyota Yaris, for about $45 a day.
You must be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license, an American Express, Visa or Master Card or be able to leave a large deposit. Remember, insurance is extra. Always phone or make arrangements for car rentals well in advance.
